A second programme of distinctive and beautiful works including an unusual Liszt arrangement and, following last week, another trio by Dvořák.

Henze’s Chamber Sonata shows the energy and vigour of his early compositions, and in fifteen short minutes skips through a multitude of fleeting colours. Tristia is an arrangement for trio of Lizst’s Vallée d’Obermann, the sixth piece of Liszt’s collection for solo piano, Années de Pèlerinage, and has been described as “reminding us of the deeply human and tormented nature of a composer haunted by death and who, more than any other, was capable of expressing its icy smile”. Dvořák’s fourth trio is among his most famous works and takes its inspiration from the Ukrainian dumka, an epic ballad.
