“Why not make our own festival? Why not have an Aldeburgh Festival”. Peter Pears’ words are inscribed on our doors. It was a suggestion readily embraced by his partner Benjamin Britten and from its inception in 1948, Aldeburgh Jubilee Hall was at the centre of this remarkable undertaking. For the Festival’s first two decades, before the construction of Snape Maltings Concert Hall, it was the Festival’s major venue, and continued to play a significant part thereafter. These walls have ears; the hall played host to an array of events including premieres of Britten’s music and an astonishing array of some of the leading figures in twentieth century music. Dr Nicholas Clark, Librarian at Britten’s former home The Red House, traces the history of Britten, Pears and Aldeburgh Jubilee Hall, the music they performed here and their notable musical guests.
The event ends at approximately 12.00pm.
