Sefo Kanuteh, with his versatile mastery of the kora, balafon, and voice, is making waves across the UK’s vibrant Mande music scene. Rooted in the musical traditions of the Mande heartland of West Africa, Sefo has been based in the UK since 2011. In addition to his regular solo performances, he is the founder of the popular ensemble Meriya Band.
A specialist in the kora, a sweet-sounding West African harp, and the balafon, a traditional wooden xylophone, Sefo brings to life two of the core instruments of Mande griot music, alongside the ngoni.
Over the past decade, the kora has seen a surge in popularity in the UK and across the world music industry, celebrated for its ability to blend seamlessly with a wide range of genres. While deeply rooted in traditional repertoire, Sefo expands its possibilities through his exploration of Latin, reggae, jazz, and blues influences.
