Haydn’s music is complemented here by a quartet from 20th-century Austrian composer Gottfried von Einem. His style is pared-back, tonal and neo-classical, and unlike many composers of his era he was not rigid or dogmatic in his musical approach, believing that “to be boring is the greatest sin an artist can commit”.
Founded in 2020, the Velvet Quartet brings together four musicians from Turkey, Latvia, Spain and Germany. Prize-winners at the 2024 Gianni Bergamo Classic Music Award and Köhler-Osbahr Chamber Music Competition, they are emerging as one of Europe’s most exciting young string quartets, combining incisive performances of the core repertoire with innovative collaborative projects.
Velvet Quartet are the recipients of the John Lawrence Field Memorial Bursary.
