Biography is at the mercy of information, and information is seldom there when you want it. Or occasionally there is a wealth of information, but most of it is window-dressing: the shop itself is shut, visible only through the front window, its private offices firmly under lock and key This is what makes biography the most sheepish and constrained of the arts, and the least like life.”
Craig Brown will talk about the hazards of biography. He was awarded the 2020 Baillie Gifford Prize for Non-Fiction for “One Two Three Four: The Beatles in Time” and the James Tait Black Prize for “Ma’am Darling: 99 Glimpses of Princess Margaret”. His most recent biography, “A Voyage Around the Queen”, acclaimed by the Sunday Telegraph as “a very unusual masterpiece” was a top ten bestseller. He is currently working on a book about Sigmund Freud.
