Wagner: Siegfried Idyll
Vaughan Williams: Lark Ascending
Lars Erik Larsson: Pastorale Suite
Mendelssohn: Symphony No. 4 ‘Italian’
Conductor: Matthew Andrews
There is little doubt that the theme of our programme is a celebration of nature and the pastoral idyll.
Wagner’s Siegfried Idyll, written as a birthday present for his wife Cosima, is believed to reference birdsong and sunrise, both of which are said to have had personal significance for the couple. Vaughan William’s The Lark Ascending is a joyous celebration of the song of the skylark expressed in soaring and lyrical musical form.
Lars-Erik Larsson’s Pastoral Suite is comprised of three movements; Overture, Romance and Scherzo. Originally conceived as six movements to accompany poetry readings on Swedish radio in the 1930s, the composer retained three for the suite of which the Romance, scored for strings alone, is often performed as a piece on its own.
Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 4, also known as the Italian, completes the programme. There is no doubt that it reflects both the joy and the deep impression that the country’s atmosphere and colour had on his personality.
