“East Anglia was the Broadway or West End of 15th century English theatre”. So said a stage historian, and Eastern Angles bring two of its biggest hits back to life in a double-bill of modern translations. The Parliament of Heaven is part medieval pageant, part play, part thriller. God is taken to task by mortals for allowing Heaven to be empty and Hell to be standing room only. Should He lower the bar? Immaculate conception, some starry-eyed shepherds and be-spangled wise ones, and a hair-raising escape from a raging Herod follow. Mankind, said to be the most popular play of the time, provides the answer. A rumbustious tale of an ‘Everyman’ figure who is tested by three types of devils bearing more than a passing resemblance to the Marx Brothers. Can he hang on to his dignity, resist the temptations of the flesh and desire and still be a good person?
