Prometheus Orchestra

Patron Sir Roger Norrington

Conductor Edmond Fivet

Prometheus Orchestra was founded in 2008 in response to the musicians who had worked with Edmond Fivet and were keen to rehearse and perform more of the orchestral repertoire. Thanks to generous financial support Prometheus Orchestra was born. The name Prometheus is taken from Beethoven’s  ‘Prometheus’ Overture, which the orchestra had recently performed.

The success of Prometheus Orchestra has been based on a number of factors. It has been able to draw on a pool of talented musicians who are mainly based in Suffolk and other parts of East Anglia. We are fortunate that so many talented musicians live in this area and it is a mark of their quality that a number of them have given concerto performances with Prometheus.

The Orchestra has strong and continuing support from its ‘Friends’ who have recognised the importance of good music, well played at local and accessible venues. The Orchestra has been fortunate to receive a number of donations and trust funding including John Lewis and for the 2016-2017 Season the Foyle Foundation. Audiences enjoy attending concerts, often in beautiful churches and at reasonable ticket prices. They have also appreciated the varied programmes on offer and have welcomed hearing familiar music played in a stylish and committed manner.

The Orchestra’s founding Patron, Sir Charles Mackerras offered unrivalled  experience and advice. Sir Charles was particularly helpful on repertoire by composers such as Mozart, Beethoven and Haydn, being performed by ‘classical’ sized orchestras much of which he had performed and recorded.

Sir Roger Norrington became the Orchestra’s Patron in 2013.

Prometheus Orchestra has performed across Suffolk. Its repertoire has included Mozart, Haydn, Walton, Beethoven, Schubert, Wagner, Vaughan Williams, Alwyn, Elgar, Grieg, Rossini, Delius and Suffolk based composers Elis Pehkonen, Chistopher Wright, Gordon Crosse, Jonathan Rutherford and the first performance of ‘Romanza for Violin’ by David Matthews.

Prometheus Orchestra has played a major part in the now established annual William Alwyn Festival and has given 40 concerts at 11 venues across Suffolk

In February 2020 the Orchestra, as part of the Beethoven 250 Anniversary, the first four of Beethoven’s Piano Concertos. The concerts were performed in a packed Aldeburgh Jubilee Hall, with the outstanding pianist Nathan Williamson.

The Orchestra also is involved in education work in schools across Suffolk. It is hoped this vital education work can be expanded in the coming years.
